Many people judge air-strut quality only by the air bellow. In reality, a durable air strut depends on multiple critical parts. Each component has different impacts on service life and failure rate. Understanding this priority list helps manufacturers, buyers and repair shops avoid plenty of pitfalls during product development, sourcing and troubleshooting.
🔝 Components Ranked by Importance
Air Bellow|No.1 Widely recognized as the most vital part. As the main sealing element of the air spring, the bellow endures cyclic air-pressure loading and repeated flexing. Its quality largely defines service life. Most air-strut leaks originate from bellow damage.

Bushing|No.2 Often overlooked, yet second only to the bellow. The bushing dampens vibration, reduces noise and absorbs harsh road impacts. Many aftermarket-produced bushings suffer inconsistent quality: flawed rubber vulcanization (over-curing / under-curing), poor sealing surfaces and unstable dimensional tolerance. Manufacturing qualified bushings demands strong engineering capability and strict quality-control systems.

3. End Fitting|No.3 A key load-bearing connection piece for air springs. Plenty of end fittings on the market show poor consistency. Common failures include out-of-tolerance mating dimensions, air leaks from defective welding, and deformation caused by insufficient material strength. Significant supplier screening work is required to source reliable end fittings.

4. Bump Stop / Secondary Spring|No.4 Do not underestimate this small component. It provides final cushioning and limits strut travel. If it fails or is missing, metal-to-metal hard contact will occur inside the strut. - Minor issue: abnormal noise and damaged internal parts - Severe issue: complete air-strut failure and vehicle breakdown

Sadly, many buyers treat bump stops as low-priority items and source cheap alternatives, creating hidden failure risks.
5. Air Valve|No.5, also known as pressure-hold valve or residual pressure limiting valve It regulates inlet and exhaust pressure for air struts. Some variants feature straight-through air-hose connections. Common aftermarket defect: excessive fluctuation in pressure regulation. After service, abnormal inlet or exhaust pressure may lock the strut, preventing proper inflation or deflation
.
✍️ Summary
Ranking: Air Bellow > Bushing > End Fitting > Bump Stop > Air Valve. No component should be disregarded. Even lower-ranked parts can cause full assembly failure once quality goes wrong.
